Last round of the Leagues (div 1 to 5)

The last round of the Leinster League divisions 1 to 5 took place on Sunday, 24th March.

No Elm Mount teams were either promoted or relegated. The closest was the O’Hanlon team which missed out on promotion by half a point. PIctured is team captain Victor Murray playing.

The Armstrong team finished in 3rd place.  The Heidenfeld team and the Ennis team both finished in 6th place. More pictures below:-

Pictured above is one of the club’s younger members Alex Goss who recently competed for his school team in a tournament run by GM Alexander Baburin. Alex’s team finished as runners up and Alex was the highest scoring player in the event

2012 Player of the Year

The 2012 Player of the Year has been shared by Fred Armstrong and David Fitzsimons.

The Trophy was presented on Monday, 14th January:-

Club President Victor Murray presented the trophy to Fred Armstrong (above). David Fitzsimons was occupied in playing a very long league match.

Christmas Blitz report

The Christmas Blitz took place on the 17th December. 20 took part in the competition. There were 2 groups of 10 with the top 4 in each group qualifying for the quarterfinals. The competition was run using the usual rating handicap method.

Eventually, it came down to the final between William Ffrench and David Fitzsimons:-

David won to come first and have first pick of the prizes. The prizes were presented by Pat Fitzsimons:-

Elm Mount Club Christmas Blitz next Monday, 17th December

This year’s Elm Mount Christmas Blitz tournament will take place next Monday 17th December 2012.  As always food will be provided with lots of prizes and fun guaranteed.
(This tournament is for members of Elm Mount chess club only)

Note: The Leinster Chess Union Christmas Blitz will be held in the Ierne club on Wednesday 19th – see the LCU website for details.

John Loughran won a grading prize in Kilkenny with a score of 4/6 in the Major.

Oliver Dunne has submitted a new “Chess Piece” about George Orwell and Chess.

The current status of Elm Mount’s teams in the Leinster Leagues is:-

Heidenfeld Trophy: 5th
Ennis Shield: 8th (although having played less games than the other teams)
O’Hanlon Cup: 6th
Bodley Cup (Group B): 2nd

City of Dublin prizewinner

Ciaran Quinn (right) receives his prize for finishing runner up in the Masters Section of the City of Dublin Chess Championships 2012 from Leinster Chess Union President, Charlie Talbot. Ciaran achieved a very creditable score of 3.5/5 in a very competitive event.
