Vladimir Ilyich Lenin (1870-1924) was reputed to have an interest in chess, and to have played in European coffee-houses, when in exile. On his return to Russia, however, he played chess only on a geo-political level and for much higher stakes: life and death! His mastery of the game of power made him the founder of the Soviet state and a figurehead for the development of the Soviet School of Chess.
